Flower Friday: Things You Did Not Know Your Florist Needed to Know!

08 31 2012

If Flower Friday is among your favorite posts then flowers are likely a high priority in your wedding floral package! And if your a newly engaged bride, and your reading this then you likely will not be hitting up your corner flower shop for a package deal. You have come into the knowledge that you want an event florist that does custom work, but do you know what unlikely details they might need to know to create that custom work for you? It’s more than a count on boutonnieres and corsages! Today we have for you just a few key points that you may not realize your florist will need to know!

Lets talk about you – The color, style, and size of your gown are all contributing factors to consider when custom designing a bridal bouquet. That said bouquet is the floral focal piece, perhaps the accessory of all bridal accessories, so every factor should be considered. Take your florist a picture of your gown, and when possible of you in it! If your considering an ivory or white based bouquet maybe even leave a dress sample with your florist for color comparison.

All the bridal party ladies – Same principal applies here, if you want bouquets that perfectly compliment those bridesmaids, coordinated corsages for the mothers, and a little bit of whimsy on those flower girls your florists needs to know all about the colors and fashion going on here as well. Bring images, samples, or ideas to help your florist grasp the color, style, aesthetic, and theme she will be designing around these all important people.

For the gents – Summer is coming to a close but often times here in Utah for the summer months you brides are considerate enough to exempt the gents from suit coats. If this is indeed the case you may want to re-consider using boutonnieres at all, they don’t pin well to button down shirts. But as always they compliment a suit, tux, or vest perfectly. Just like with the ladies the color of said suit, tux, or vest and in addition ties or other accents may come in handy when creating the perfect little floral accessory, so be in the know about these things as well.

Floral decor – Your likely grasping the concept here by now, your probably picking up on whats next right? Your florist needs more than a table count. They need to know what size and shape of table those centerpieces will land on! Including the color{s} of linen, or table color/style, and possibly even a floor plan for the placement of your wedding furniture. If you have other table floral needs make sure you communicate the same for other pertinent placement as well.

Walk down that aisle – Are you envisioning a grand floral splendor down your aisle and at your ceremony site? Give your florist as many details about the length of your aisle, texture of the ground, surrounding elements, lighting factors, and any structural knowledge that might play a part in floral engineering. Even a simple petal carpet will still require a length spec to accurately deliver your dream walk.

And let them eat cake … not flowers – Thinking of fresh flowers on your edible focal piece? Make sure to have your pastry artists info ready for your florist and visa-verse, they will need to work together. Along with color, tier quantity, and texture so that your florist has an idea of what they are working with.

Ultimately your florist will need a good deal of detail that you might have not imagined they would need to know, that is if your hiring a custom florist that specializes in events and weddings. And do not worry if you do not have the info, they will make sure to pry it out of you as you come into it.
