Nice Day For a Bright Wedding {Post Exchange w/Tessa Woolf}

08 31 2011

Today we have our monthly post exchange with the best editor in town, Miss Tessa Woolf of SL/PC Bride & Groom. She has something fun and trendy to offer us!

Break out the sunglasses, ladies and gents, because bright colors are having their moment in the spotlight. From designer fashions to home décor, Day-glo shades and neon hues are popping up everywhere—even at weddings. Before you start flashing back to major bright mishaps from decades past, keep in mind these aren’t exactly the same bright hues that accompanied big hair in the 80s. Sure, there are neon yellows, lime greens, and hot pinks, but we’re here to show you how to achieve brights done right, not brights gone wrong. The new way to work with these colors is to 1.) Pair them with something neutral (making them a natural fit for white, cream, taupe, etc., wedding backdrops), 2.) Choose classic silhouettes in these modern hues, and 3.) Don’t OD on the trend.

Below are some of our favorite ways to play with this trend and incorporate bright hues in your big day.

Unless you’re really feeling this color trend, chances are you’re not going to wear a neon yellow or bright red wedding gown (although, this fire engine-red frock by Reem Acra could give any white dress a run for its money).

Instead, try working the trend by adding bright accessories to your attire: a purple suede high heel, a yellow patent-leather belt, a chunky orange bangle, a shocking pink or yellow clutch. Bridesmaids can also work these bright accessories into their wedding wardrobes, but they have more room to play with the trend, too…

You may not want to walk down the aisle in a colorful frock, but that doesn’t mean your bridesmaids don’t! Consider dressing your maids in hues like royal blue, bright yellow, bubble gum pink, and lime green, like these four Alfred Sung bridesmaid dresses (Alfred Sung dresses are available locally at Lily & Iris in Salt Lake City).

Another easy—and super affordable—way bridesmaids can work this trend is to pair their dresses with brightly hued tights, from green to red and blue to pink. (Colored opaque tights tend to be the most flattering, though patterned tights are another hot fashion trend.) Bonus for your bridesmaids if you’re planning a fall or winter wedding—they will look stylish and stay warm!

Another easy and affordable way to play up the bright trend is with makeup. Swipe on bright orange, red, or pink lipstick (as seen on models at the J Mendel fashion show), or try Day-Glo manis and pedis. We love Essie’s neon nail polish collection and Chanel’s neon yellow ‘Mimosa’ nail polish.

Grooms and Groomsmen

Like their female counterparts, grooms and groomsmen can get in on the bright action with accessories. Try a neon watch like this orange Nixon timepiece or neon sunglasses like these shades by Ray-Ban. Ties, bow ties, and pocket squares in bright hues can also work, but they are trickier to pull off—if you go this route, be sure to purchase items in quality fabrics (otherwise the look can appear, ahem, cheap).

If you plan to incorporate bright hues in your wedding décor, set the tone with a colorful invitation. Two great picks: This Bella Figura lime green letterpress invitation (available locally at The Write Image in SLC), and this graphic custom-designed poster-style invitation we spotted on The Knot.

Finally, add a splash of color to your big day with bold blooms. When it comes to bright flowers, select one bright shade for all your blooms, or keep your color pairings minimal—I’d suggest no more than two, maybe three, bright shades in one combo. This bridal bouquet designed by Branches, a local event floral company, nails the look: striking purple carnations paired with eye-catching yellow Billy Balls. Beautiful brights!

What do you think of the brights trend? Will you be incorporating neon hues in your wedding day attire or décor?
